Current Volunteer Opportunities (Unpaid Positions)
HIV/AIDS Clinical Mentors in NW Nepal needed for 1 to 3 months
Opportunity Description: In collaboration with the local health authorities and Family Health International (FHI), ICEHA clinical mentors are assisting with the build-up of HIV/AIDS medical expertise in northwestern Nepal. To date very little HIV care, let alone access to ART, has existed in Nepal. But slowly that picture is changing. With ARVs now being introduced in zonal hospitals in the Kailali and Kanchanpur districts, it is important for local healthcare providers to become confident and knowledgeable about HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment. Positions available for MDs, RNs, NPs, PAs. Expenses paid. The minimum assignment duration is 6 weeks.
Total Number of Volunteers Needed: 4

Clinical Mentors for HIV Care and Delivery of Antiretroviral Therapy in South Africa needed for 1 to 3 months
Opportunity Description: South Africa is a country with an HIV prevalence rate of 18.8%, and the lack of practical clinical expertise in HIV/AIDS is one of the greatest constraints to the rapid scale up of HIV/AIDS treatment programs. In collaboration with Family Health International (FHI), ICEHA clinical mentors are providing hands-on coaching to help local healthcare providers gain this practical expertise. Adult and pediatric HIV specialists are needed. Mentors will initially be stationed at rural and mobile clinics in 4 provinces throughout South Africa (Free State, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape). Over the course of the program, 300 clinics and more than 2000 local healthcare providers will be covered. Tens of thousands of patients will benefit as a result. Positions available for MDs, RNs, NPs, PAs, social workers, and pharmacists. Expenses paid and the minimum assignment is 6 weeks.

HIV/AIDS Clinical Mentors in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam needed for 1 to 3 months
Opportunity Description: In collaboration with the Vietnamese health authorities, ICEHA clinical mentors will be scaling up HIV/AIDS knowledge and capacity at two hospitals in the Mekong Delta. ARVs are now being introduced in Vietnam and local healthcare providers urgently need to become confident and knowledgeable about HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment. In order to make ARVs available to patients in Vietnam, ICEHA clinical mentors have been requested to provide clinical mentoring in clinics starting approximately 1 month before the arrival of the medication until approximately 6 months later, in consecutive periods of several weeks. Adult and pediatric HIV specialists, as well as those with experience with IV drug users, are needed. Positions available for MDs and RNs. Expenses paid. The minimum assignment duration is 6 weeks. Assignment dates in fall 2007.

HIV/AIDS Clinical Mentors in Burundi needed for 1 to 3 months
Opportunity Description: ICEHA is working with Healthnet TPO to provide clinical mentoring in post conflict areas in Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, and South Sudan. Ultimately, the return on investment (impact) will be greatest here as these settings start from a very basic level and entire healthcare systems need to be set up again. The programs in DRC and South Sudan will begin next year, but the program in Burundi will need mentors as of fall 2007. In all of these settings, Healthnet TPO is partnering with the local government to support a program aimed at comprehensive rehabilitation of essential health services with specific attention on sexual and reproductive health, HIV/AIDS and malaria. Despite the progress that has been made, HIV/AIDS services are only provided by a very limited number of facilities and there is a lack of basic knowledge about HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention amongst local healthcare providers. ICEHA clinical mentors will be working at clinics, hospitals, VCT centers, and PMTCT sites in each country to improve practical clinical skills and operational systems around HIV/AIDS. Prior to sending any clinical mentors to these sites a security visit will be conducted to ensure settings are appropriate for receiving clinical mentors. Physicians and nurses who are comfortable in resource-poor settings are needed for minimum assignments of 6 weeks.

Mission Statement: (See Web Site For Updated Information)
ICEHA is an international not-for-profit organization that engages healthcare professionals to rapidly transfer their expertise on HIV care and infectious diseases to colleagues in developing countries, using an innovative method of clinical mentoring. Unlike other organizations, ICEHA volunteer clinical mentors do not provide patient care directly. Instead, they equip local caregivers with the skills needed to take care of their own patients. As a result, thousands of patients receive HIV care when none existed before, care delivered by their own healthcare providers, within existing resource limitations.
